There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just across the border from nearby Thailand, in which casino wagering is banned. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a relatively small space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent location, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing capital acquired from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; still, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and even though visas are allegedly needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The original Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau casino, highlights 150 slot machine games and 60 gaming tables. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machine games and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel compound that highlights a number of luxuries aside from the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 gaming tables.
